Adjust
tone and color.

Set brightness, contrast and color, then finish with curves, a Lab Look or a preset of your own.

Adjust a frame

  1. In Edit, under Tone in the Adjust tab, click Auto for a starting point.
  2. Adjust Exposure, Contrast, Highlights, Shadows, Whites and Blacks.
  3. In Color, set the white balance with the eyedropper or the three color sliders, and the Saturation.
  4. Try a Lab Look: click a tile, then set its Amount.
  5. Refine with Levels, Curves, HSL and Color Grading if you need to.
  6. To use the result again, click + in Presets and save it.
What Auto does

It sets the six Tone sliders for this frame: brightness moves toward a middle gray, and contrast, highlights and shadows change only when the frame is very flat, harsh, clipped or crushed. On B&W it brightens at most half a stop, so dark frames stay dark. ⌘Z undoes it. Each section’s Reset sets that section back.

Levels, Curves, HSL and Color Grading
  • Levels: Black, Midtones, White, Output Black and Output White, for RGB or one channel.
  • Curves: the Contrast menu sets a starting RGB curve. Click to add a point, drag to move it, double-click or drag it off to remove it.
  • HSL: Hue, Saturation or Luminance for eight colors, red to magenta.
  • Color Grading: pick Shadows, Midtones, Highlights or Global, then drag in the color wheel (or set Hue, Saturation and Luminance) to tint those tones. Blending and Balance set how the tints meet.
Lab Looks

A Look is a finishing style on top of the conversion, named for the film it imitates. It doesn’t need to match the film you shot; None removes it. The section’s … menu imports and exports Looks as .emullook files. Importing a Look you already have adds nothing. A different Look with a name you already use is added with a number (“Portra 400 2”); EmulLab’s own Looks are never replaced.

Presets

+ saves this frame’s settings: name it and choose which groups to include. A preset never changes a frame’s film base, crop, dust spots, eyedropper gray or film type. Click a preset to apply it to the selected frames. Right-click one to update, rename, export or delete it; … imports .emulpreset files.

Sharpening, lens corrections and effects
  • Detail: Sharpening, Radius and Masking. Masking keeps sharpening to edges, sparing smooth areas and grain. Judge it at 100%.
  • Lens Corrections: vignetting, distortion and chromatic aberration. For uneven light, shoot your light source with no film (same lens, aperture and focus), then choose New from Blank Shot from the Flat Field menu. It applies to the whole roll.
  • Effects: Vignette and Grain. Grain is sized for the full-resolution photo: judge it at 100%.
Compare and zoom

Edit opens on After, the result. Y shows Before and After side by side: drag the handle all the way to either edge to see all of one. \ shows Before alone: the scan as it is, with no heals, so you can see the dust you removed. Press the key again to go back to After. Fit, 100% and 200% are in the toolbar. Zoomed in, Before and the split view go back to Fit; Crop and Heal show After only. On the photo: Double-click for 100%, Scroll or pinch to zoom, Space-drag to move around.

Applies to EmulLab 0.9.1 (Public Beta). Updated October 9, 2026.
